Dancing with the dogs

My sister called me Friday with a sad story. An acquaintance of hers had died and left Cloe, his German Shepherd homeless. A local shelter had the dog temporarily. Would I take her?

I certainly would have loved to. She is a handsome animal. I called the shelter and talked with them about her.

"How is she with cats?" was one of my first questions.

Long pause. "She is good with other dogs but aggressive toward cats," was the answer.

It wasn't meant to be. If I wasn't away all day every day, we could have worked through her problem with cats. With me gone so much, a large aggressive dog simply could not be trusted not to somehow hurt a kitty.

I called the shelter today and she has a home, I hope it's a good one.

While we're on the subject of dogs... This is a You Tube clip from the British talent search program, Britain's Got Talent. Dog Geek, this BC looks like your B all grown up.

See what wonderful dogs Border Collies can be when they are not bent on destruction. Really, if you have a Border Collie you must have an endless amount of time to devote to them. They just don't do well left to their own devices but they do amazingly well when they have a lot of supervision.

Enjoy the dance;)

You have a good heart - I think it is great that you considered to take this recently homeless dog. I pray that she goes to a good home as well.

I can't wait to see what this spring holds for your garden. We are enjoying some cool rain here. I think the only thing that keeps me happy about it is knowing that this will make more green!

I'm glad that the dog was able to find a home. So many returns to shelters could be avoided if people did their homework and understood the characteristics of the breed they are looking at. Of course more difficult in a mixed breed..Love the video clip...Border collies really do need to be kept busy....

Wow - you're right! That looks so much like a grown-up version of B!

Don't feel bad about not being able to take the GSD - the well-being of your animals has to come first.

Marnie, I'm glad that Cloe found a new home; I do hope she's happy there. I understand about your wanting to take her in, but then deciding not to. I volunteer with my granddaughter several times a month at the local Humane Society, and it's hard not to bring an animal home each time I go:) I had planned to find a puppy there, but so many of their adoptables are pit bulls or pit bull mixes, and I want a dog that I can feel safe about around my grandchildren. I made the right choice when I found Sophie, though she wasn't a shelter animal--she's perfect, though a little rambunctious yet, around the grandkids.

Loved the video! I didn't know Simon could smile:) Sophie starts puppy school next week--I wonder if I could eventually train her to do this?:)

Marnie, as animal lovers it's hard to see one in need of a home. But you did the right thing and I am sure she will be well loved in her new home.

I'm glad the shelter was able to find her a good home. All my pets are rescues so I know how you feel.

Our Stella is a beautiful "found" German shepherd. She's wonderful with our cat, however, yesterday my son and I were sitting in our kitchen when a gorgeous black cat came to the door and scratched on it to get in. I was going to the door to see if he/she possibly had a collar when Stella saw the cat and tried to eat the cat. Obviously, Ms. Stella does not have a universal love for all things cat.

Glad the dog found a home, and do too, hope it's a good one!

I couldn't take a dog that's aggressive to cats either -- just not an option.

I've heard that Border Collies can be tough. My old farrier actually gave his away to a friend. She just drove him crazy, always pacing the fence and wanting to play fetch. He told me that she was always waking him with her ball, rolling it on the floor toward the bed. NOT a dog to sit in a truck all day and then expect to relax at night.

Of course a lot of dogs are like that. High maintenance! :)

I'm so glad they found a home for the dog. Hopefully, someone who didn't have any other pets, and they can devote a lot of time and attention to him.

So funny about the dog adoption post. We just adopted a grown black lab from a couple down on their luck and just couldn't keep her. I have to admire the girl and the dog in the video. We are now training and it is a lot of work! What a fun video!

It was sweet of you to consider taking Cloe, but you must think of your own pets first. I hope and pray she'll have a good home with the folks that adopted her.
I loved the YouTube video. What a dog, full of personality, and what a talented girl to train him so well. Great fun. Thanks :)
I hope you had a very happy Easter.

Hi Marnie,
You're such a good soul for considering taking in Cloe, but I agree, it doesn't sound like she would have been a good fit for your animals, which is, of course, a pity, because she would have had a great home with you. I'm glad to hear she was adopted --she's a gorgeous dog, and I'm skittish about G Shepherds-- so perhaps it was for the best.

I've been eyeing a Corgi-Australian Cattle Dog mix who was up for adoption here in IA (her owner has terminal cancer), but I checked on her last night and she has been adopted! That made me happy, because I don't think we're ready just yet for another dog since Hanna came on board so recently. Sometimes I guess we just have to let things take their course (though there's another Cardigan Corgi down in MO I'd love to adopt too!) and sometimes they work out ok.

That video was great! I love K9 freestyle dancing, and I think if either of us were decent dancers we could easily train Hanna to do that with the moves she makes, lol. I think Border Collies are amazing dogs, and would love to have one one day, but not in the city ... that would be too cruel. They definitely need a job or they are unhappy and I couldn't put a dog through that. I admire what Dog Geek does with hers, but we're just not in a situation where we could do that ... so it's going to be agility training for Hanna this summer!

What a beautiful dog! I'm glad she has a new home, I hope the lucky owners understand that animals grieve a death just like humans. I'm sure she's well aware of what has happened.

We had a bad storm this past weekend and my dogs went bezerk-no where near like your Aggie. I told my husband and son you would pay shipping and they said "NO" still. Can you imagine? Too bad about that shepherd. I hope he has a good home too.

I'm so glad the German Shepherd found a home. I once had such a sweet one.

The Border Collies are fantastic! I love to go watch the sheep dog trials. They love to work a herd. I once had an Australian Shepherd. Indigo was such a sweetie, so I must share my favorite story about him.

First, we lived on a farm with horses, so Indigo was outside all day watching over the horses. I bought a turquoise necklace in Santa Fe and then lost it the first time that I wore it to work. I searched my office, my car, my house and couldn't find the necklace. About one week later, I came home from work and Indigo met me as usual. This time, he dropped my necklace on the sidewalk at my feet! He was only 5 months old, but had found my necklace somewhere in the yard and brought it to me! Indy lived on up in his mid-teens then passed quietly. A great dog!

It's really wonderful to see so many animal lovers blogging.

Hi Bren, it's raining here too and cold. We needed the rain.

RamblingWood, I hope she's happy in her new home. She was very close to her former owner and very well trained. The owner taught her all commands in German.

Hi DogGeek, I thought of B the minute I saw Gin. Very much alike;)

Rose, good luck with puppy class. Sure you and Sophie could do that.

Hi Beckie, hope you're right.

PerennialGardner, I hope she's happy with her new people.

TSAnnie, Stella must have thought the cat was a threat to you kitties.

SweetBay, my BC doesn't pace or pester. She just needs lots of supervision. When I first got her as a tiny pup she thought she should herd horses. Two of my mares were very bad to strike or kick dogs. Aggie had to be watched and supervised constantly or she would have been killed.

Hi MorningGlories, it didn't take long to place her.

Gayle, I love the video. Guess I've watched it a dozen times.

Marnie, I can relate to wanting to adopt another pet, but you're right in that it has to fit with the pets you already have. I'm glad the dog found another home! The video is hilarious--not only is the dog (and the kid) great, but (gasp) Simon Cowell actually smiles!

Roses and Lilacs said...

Hi Kerri, we had a nice Easter, hope you did too. I love the video too. Very close bond between the girl and her dog.

IVG, wouldn't it be fun to learn a few of the dance moves? I wouldn't want to compete, just play.

Jamie and Randy, it will be a big adjustment for the dog. Hopefully she will be fine.

Hi Tina, the storms went south of us so we only got cold rain and a little wind. Tennessee has had more than its share of storms lately. Hope you didn't get any damage.

Cameron, what a good dog she was to carry the necklace to you. I would consider it pretty remarkable. Somehow she knew the necklace was out of place where it had fallen and belonged with you.

Hi Susie, it was a good clip. I love watching K9 Free Style.

Monica, I know, Simon seemed to genuinely love the dancing dog. Who would have thought he had a soft spot for anything.

Hi Joey, yes I hate sad dog stories.

Sharon, that was a cool video. So are you and Scratchy dancing around the house? I've been known to waltz with a cat--very much against their will;)

Marnie, I am not at all surprised you wanted to adopt Chloe...you have a generous heart. My son rescued a dog and they are bonded for life! He says that he never realized the HUGE responsibility an animal would be, nor the way a rescue animal would adore the rescuer! I hope she goes to a family who will love her forever.

This video and talk of border collies reminds me of a clip from the Sesame Street show...I'm A Dog, I'm A Hard Working Dog! with a very hard working border collie herding cows or sheep.

I'm glad to hear that the dog found a home. My dream in life is to help animals left behind as a result of death and also helping people with terminal illnesses to find a home for their animals to give them peace of mind. I can't imagine leaving behind my animals so I hope to help others with the transition too.

Lisa at Greenbow said...

Everyone that has pets should have someone that will take care of them in case of your death. Not a pleasant thing to think about but a very real concern. A friend of mine and I have a pact that if either of us go the other will take our pets in. My daughter will also be in line for guardianship. Such is life.

Hi Marnie,
I'm so glad Cloe got a home so quickly. Cloe would have had a wonderful home with you if there wasn't an issue with cats.

I haven't been able to make the youtube work, oh, I just checked back with it and it says it is not available but I could not make it work when it was available ...hmmmm.

Marnie, I hope Cloe finds a good home soon! She looks like a really nice dog.

sweetbay said...

LOL Marnie my old farrier said his dog was neurotic. He loved her but I think she was happier to be in a home where people could play with her.

We always kept our JRT away from the horses too, because she didn't have a lick of sense and she was so small they could have stepped on her without knowing she was there!

Our neighbors when I was growing up had a couple of Border Collies that used to round up the horses at feeding time. I could see them acros the pond. The owner would yell at the dogs to no avail. I think the horses actually enjoyed being "chased". Those same horses learned to let themselves out of their pasture gate for a walk around the neighborhood.

It's sad that you couldn't have your friends dog, but at the end of the day, you have to think of your own pets. I tried to take on my sisters German Shepherd years ago and he tried to eat my cat, so it didn't work out :(

I loved the clip of gin the dancing dog. I missed it on TV and it's given me a much needed lift, thank you Marnie and for your kind comments too. It's such a roller coaster of emotions.

Another person who would have passed because of my kitty but it was so great you considered adopting her and called for info. I'm glad they found her a home ~ when that doesn't happen very fast, it makes me second guess myself.

Roses and Lilacs said...

Hi Gail, I had a rescue sheltie years ago. He and I were inseperable. I could take him anywhere and never use a leash. He was velcro-ed to my leg.

BeadedTail, wouldn't that be hard, leaving a beloved animal? It would prey on your mind.

Hi Lisa, not many people think about that.

Walk2Write, yes the Obamas got a cute one. The White House probably has a staff of 20 people assigned to take care of little Beau.

Nan, did you paste the 'embedded link' onto the HTML page of your new blog. It took me quite a while to figure it out but I knew there had to be a way.

Hi Marmee, that dog would do anything for her.

Hi Sherri, she was adopted. Hope it works out happily for all.

SweetBay, that must have thrilled the neighborhood to have horses wandering the streets;) Mine escaped onto a grass airport runway one time. Imagine my surprise when the police came to my door and drove me down to do a roundup.

Hi Kim, GSD's can be aggressive if they aren't introduced to cats at an early age. You have my deepest sympathy for what you and Max are going through. Hugs.

Kathleen, if she hadn't found a home I would have taken her and confined her when I couldn't supervise. It wouldn't have been the best plan for either of us.

I tried it this morning from your blog and it worked!

I just never had the patience to properly train a dog. The last one we had (now our granddog), Mr. Mutt Rocky, is a very happy dog, but just looks at you with a "you must be crazy" kind of stare, when throwing a stick or ball for fetch. Oh well!

Hi Sam, good thing the dog had plenty of patience to train you;)

I had to come over and see what all the barking was about. I'm glad the shepherd got a home and lots of fun to watch the video. You can do a lot with an animal if you love them.
