For most of us who are intimidated by theories of garden design,
the cottage garden provides immediate appeal, since it is a
horticultural rather than an architectural solution to a limited area.
~ Patricia Thorpe

Yesterday Tina at IN THE GARDEN mentioned how handy these blogs are for looking back at last year's photos and plant lists to help us remember what was where and what was new.

Last year I planted six new daylilies and this year, couldn't remember the names of four. Luckily, I did a post about them and so was able to look back and see what I ordered.

So far only two of my newest daylilies have bloomed. The fans were pretty small when I planted them so there aren't a lot of blooms this season, but enough to get some idea of how they look. The first is Sabine Bauer, very striking with a dark eye and well defined edging around the petals. Sabine has several awards plus I found her on a couple growers "Top Picks" list. Here is her first bloom in my garden.

Not as crazy about the second new daylily to bloom. Sixth Sense is cream and gold with a cherry eye and an unusual reddish wired edge. There's just something about this one .... the colors don't look well together. (I should have brushed off the pollen before taking the photo.) SS fades out in strong sunlight and may do better in partial shade.

This year I ordered Calico Jack a bright yellow with a plum eye and edging.
(All photos are from Gilbert Wild 's catalog where I placed my order and Stardreamer Daylilies.)

Spacecoast Scramble, sunny yellow with a heavy texture and a delicious scrambled edge.

Spiritual Corridor, lovely lavender with a lighter eye and edge. I love this one and think it will fit with almost all the colors in my garden.

I can entertain myself for hours just reading the descriptions in the daylily catalogs. Looking at some of the newer ones I could almost, almost justify spending $200.00 for one daylily.
Listen to this:

Glamoureyez "
Dramatic, gaudy, and stunning are some of the words that come to mind when you see this flower. The deepest burgundy purple fills the overpowering eye and hugely ruffled edge with a butter cream base." You can have it for $175.00

I especially like the daylilies with teeth: Twice the Bites - "
This cutting edge (no pun intended) daylily sets the new standard for doubles with teeth . This daylily has the largest teeth on a beautifully clean rose violet background, that I have yet to see. TWICE THE BITES is a complex flower with many beautiful traits such as the large green throat, excellent substance, and gold teeth everywhere." $150.00

I'm waiting for these to go on sale, but you can see them and others at the Auction.

Wishing everyone a great forth of July Weekend!

Beautiful day lilies. Posting about your garden sure is handy for reference. I've already found that out. Next year, it will be even more helpful. Spiritual Corridor is my favorite you showed. It's so rich and relaxing looking at the same time.

Hi Marnie: I like the Spiritual Corridor too, very nice! Those other newer ones were ummm, way too expensive... I would have to rope off that section of the garden to ensure my 4 year old helper didn't pick me something! Happy 4th to you - enjoy your holiday!

Awesome daylilies. I first fell in love with Sabine, then came 6th Sense and then Calico Jack. Geez-love em all! The things the breeders have come up with are incredible.

P.S. This post showed up under yesterday's date so I had to go back to find it. Glad I looked-love the daylilies. Never really shopped for them before but the descriptions are cool. Thanks for the heads up on Randy's post on daylilies. I'll go check it out.

I am a great lover of daylilies. I do not have any multicolored ones, but I have to have Sabine. It is lucious. The difficulty is finding one more place to put a plant!

I think I like Spacecoast Scramble best. Scrambled eggs on a stick! Spiritual corridor is also really nice but I wish it didn't have the yellow center. I'm still waiting for daylily breeding to achieve purples that satisfy me. I'm sure it'll happen soon!

Ah, now it is showing up as recent...

Ohhhh, I covet Calico Jack. Your daylilies are beautiful. Show more, more, more!

They are lovely daylilies all. Thanks for stopping by my blog. Yes, Glamour Eyes is a pricey girl, but her price will come down I promise you. Buying new daylilies is like buying new cars. They depreciate as soon as you drive them off the lot. :) Yours are lovely.~~Dee

Your blooms are lovely Marnie.
I would think they look stunning in a border.

Spiritual Corridor is beautiful. I love the softness of the colour.

Blogs are great for looking back.....a wonderful record of plantings and changes to the garden.....

I keep telling myself that I don't need any more daylilies and then this. What beautiful lilies you have. Those ruffled edges are so pretty. They have given me a bad case of the wants. I hope you have a great weekend too.

That's it !!!
I'm getting some more daylilies for next year. Don't think our garden marts have a wonderful selection like you have, but I really haven't looked.
Still have some space in my sun bed where my geraniums are dieing :(
You're right about our blogs being a good source for records...that's why I started a garden website long before blogging.

I could not ever imagine paying that much for daylilies or any other plant for that matter.

You have some real pretty blooms Marnie.

Happy 4th weekend to you!

Your daylilies are beautiful! We only have the boring orange ones in our garden. I can't imagine paying that much for a flower - wowza!

Hope you have a wonderful holiday weekend!

I can't believe you and Tina have such pretty day lilies!! I know they are beautiful somewhere in Texas....just not in my yard! :)

Sabine is certainly a striking beauty! I enjoy reading the catalog descriptions, too, but even more I enjoy visiting a daylily farm and seeing the lilies in person. I'm taken with names, too; last year I had to buy "Canterbury Tales," but "Divine Comedy" and "Tennyson" were a little too pricey for me. I'm still looking for a "Shakespeare":)

I don't have one daylily in my garden Marnie ~ I'm not sure why I never got into them ~ but at those prices I'm going to just admire them on your blog! You have some beauties ~ the first one is really eye-catching.
I have some catching up to do on your blog ~ haven't been able to do my normal visiting lately but I hope things are going well. Happy 4th of July too.

Marnie, I think they are all absolutely stunning! I love daylilies and I have just purchased 3 new ones from the Lowes Plant Rescue rack for $.99 each! Check it out! I have some from Gilbert Wild and from Roycroft Daylilies. I wish they bloomed for more than one day, but I love to see them open and strut their stuff! Have a great 4th!

Gosh! That 2 as bites sounds stunning! I'm going to check them out.

It is still so hard to imagine all that work the plant puts into these beauties only lasts ONE day. I had to rein in my Hubby from ordering more colors...I love them all but ONLY ONE DAY =(

Lona said...

Hi Marnie. Girl I love them all. I know what you mean about the blooms. I cannot wait until my new ones in the woodland bed get grown up. The blooms this year were few and had floppy stems.
Have a wonderful weekend!

That does it! I keep thinking that I should add a few more "fancy" daylilies, and your beauties have convinced me!

Their all so beautiful but my favorites have to be Calico Jack & Spiritual Corridor. I love that combo of yellow & purple. :)

Marnie! I'm so sorry, I don't know how I missed your last post :( It was such a lovely post too and I thought you did wonderfully well with your basket arrangement! Of course my favourite photo there was the sweet little Song Sparrow :)

All the Daylilies on this post are beautiful, such lovely colours. It amazes me how many different ones there are.

I hardly ever took photos of my garden before I started blogging--and they are a great record of what bloomed when and where. I was just looking over some photos from last year realizing--hey! I forgot I planted that! Hey! That didn't come back! ;-) Happy long weekend to you!

Some of them can be very pricey!

i do love daylilies and have yet to plant some here on the farm...thanks for reminding me to do so. you have made some great choices.
we are in a terrible drought here and everything is looking listless.

You have some beauties! I am loving daylilies, too. I probably have more of those than any other flower, I think. I am sad that some have finished for the year. The most I've ever spent for one was $22.00 a few years ago, which was a splurge.

I was tickled to get some gallon sized ones for $5.00 each at the end of last summer. It was so much fun seeing them bloom this year.
