The garden is winding down. Another week or two and we will see a killing frost. I love the cool, dry air of autumn. I will miss the fresh tomatoes and sweet corn but I'm not sad about the end of the season for flower gardening. I'm ready for a change.
Below are a few shots of favorite plants that bloomed in the late summer.
These are my first Magic Lilies. There are so many affectionate names for this plant. Surprise, Magic, Resurrection, and I'm sure others as well... I found these at the Klehm plant swap this spring. They were a mass of broken, limp foliage that did not look too promising. Anyway, I caged the foliage to keep it up off the ground and it remained greenish for several weeks before it disappeared. I had forgotten them completely when suddenly like magic they reappeared.

Phlox is a favorite
The new varieties of phlox are healthy and long blooming. I love the impact those big, bright clusters make in my garden.
Tempest is on chipmunk patrol. I wish he would catch a few. My yard is like Swiss cheese.

Lucky you to find the surprise lilies! We love them down here in the south and these particular ones will multiply like crazy. They are easy to divide in the green; which for us here is in February. So glad you found a good phlox. It is hard to find the good ones.

Phlox are so pretty! Temptest is so handsome! Our garden is still going but we don't get many frosts here so some things grown year round. We're just hoping for rain since we've hardly had any in forever!
Your phlox are gorgeous! And you're so right: we need to move on to the next season, even though it leads to "the W word", but it's necessary in order to get to the next spring. A good, long rest while the gardens slumber. Thanks for posting! -Beth

Chipmunk patrol.... I love it. None of my dogs ever caught a chipmunk but a few squirrels bit the dust caught in deep snow after raiding a the bird feeders on the deck...:)
Beautiful blooms! I can't believe I have yet to plant any tall phlox in my garden. I've always held back since they have such a reputation for downy mildew and seemed fussy to me, but I really should try one of the newer varieties someday. Yours look gorgeous!
My Phlox died after 4 years. Maybe I'll try again. Say hi to Tempest.
